The Zoom-Out Mindset

Broader Views.
Stronger Minds.

A practical way to step back, see the bigger picture and make better decisions, at work and in life.

The Zoom-Out Premise
“At times we can hold a narrow or limited view that is unhelpful to ourselves and others.”
Our Mission: The Zoom-Out Motto

Help people to:

“Zoom-Out to find the most helpful perspective.”

What is Zoom-Out?

A wider view for a narrower moment.

Zoom-Out is a practical thinking skill: stepping back to see the bigger picture before you act. It helps you trade a narrow, unhelpful view for a wider, more helpful one, whether you're facing a tough decision at work, a difficult conversation, or a worry you can't shake.

It's based on wisdom from modern and ancient disciplines alike: Stoicism, psychology, neuroscience, systems thinking, professional coaching, business agility, and more, distilled into simple, practical shifts in perspective you can use the moment you notice you're zoomed in on something unhelpful.

What People Say

Zoom-Out, in their words.

Feedback from coaches, leaders and teams, including at Schroders, Lloyds Banking Group and Bookatable.

We had some big challenges and Rob helped to coach and navigate the new teams through these with energy and good humour. The teams responded well to his zoom-out workshops which blended well with the “We Mindset” that forms part of our culture.

It was Rob's work with Zoom-Out that stands out the most. Rob introduced the coaches to a conflict resolution workshop and we all agreed it was brilliant.

Thank you Rob and I very much look forward to being able to learn more, or better still get to attend another one of one of your exciting Zoom Out workshops. I very much enjoyed the Edinburgh workshop last year.

Rob was instrumental in building our new agile product function. He helped the team understand the importance of challenging default perspectives by ‘zooming in and out’

Rob also created and continues to evolve a methodology called Zoom-Out, helping people appreciate a different perspective on life’s situations, and his workshop on this was awesome.

Why Zoom-Out?

Because perspective is power.

The pace of work and life keeps rising, and so do the demands on our minds. Under pressure, it's easy to slip into reactive thinking and tunnel vision.

In life
Zoomed-In
  • Get stuck on problems.
  • React emotionally.
  • Miss what really matters.
Zoomed-Out
  • See more options.
  • Think more clearly.
  • Respond more wisely.
At work
Zoomed-In
  • Firefighting the urgent.
  • Defending your corner.
  • Reacting to the last email.
Zoomed-Out
  • Seeing the priority.
  • Understanding the other team.
  • Responding, not reacting.
  • ✓ How to spot when you're unhelpfully zoomed-in.
  • ✓ Practical ways to shift your thinking and perspective.
  • ✓ Tools for steadier decisions, better conversations and practical resilience.
  • ✓ Simple mental habits you can use at work and at home.
What You'll Learn

Meet the Founder

Hello, I’m Rob Aston.

I created Zoom-Out after years of coaching teams and individuals, and watching one simple idea help more than any other: step back to see the bigger picture.

I’m an agile coach, trainer and author with over 20 years of leading and coaching teams, from start-ups to global organisations. I’m fascinated by how much more control we have than we tend to realise over our own happiness and personal effectiveness.
